Composition Book Project
You will create a book with examples of all the compositional elements. You will need at least 3 excellent examples of each compositional element listed below. Please put your book in the order that the elements appear on this handout!
1. Simplicity: Close up of object, simple/clean background
2. Rule of Thirds: Composition is divided into thirds either vertically or horizontally. The focal point is placed off center.
3. Lines: 1 example of each on one page:
a. Leading Lines – take you to the focal point
b. Diagonal – dynamic movement
c. S-curves – natural lines found in nature
4. Balance: 3 examples of each (2 pages)
a. Symmetrical – Even balance or weight on both sides of photo
b. Asymmetrical – uneven weight
5. Framing: Objects surrounding the focal point
6. Directional/dramatic lighting: Spot light, angled light, sunlight
7. Emotion: Portraits – evoke the audience to feel
8. Repetition: Object repeating itself in the photo. Can emphasize movement
9. Manipulation: Digital/computer used to change photo
10. Perspective: 3 examples of each (2 pages)
a. Low position – you are looking up
b. High position – you are looking down
11. Action: 3 examples of each (2 pages)
a. Stop action – Catching action with a fast shutter speed
b. Blur action – Movement with a low shutter speed
12. Depth of Field: 3 examples of each (2 pages)
a. Great depth of field – Everything in focus, from background to foreground
b. Poor/short depth of field – Focal point in focus/other objects are out of focus
13. Focal Point: Vivid focal point – eye is led to it, center of interest
14. Portrait: People – Torso up, studio setting
15. Space: Foreground, mid-ground, and background. Landscapes
16. Texture: imitation of the way something feels
17. Color: theme/scheme, unity, feeling
18. Vision: inspirational to you personally
19. EXTRA CREDIT – Avoid Mergers: two objects combined to make one yuck!
Your finished book should end up being 22 pages long, or 23 pages with the extra credit. Each page should be labeled neatly. Your book should also have a neat, creative cover. You will complete this book and keep it in your photography binder.
You have several weeks to finish this assignment once it has been assigned. The Composition book will be due at the end of the 5th rotation. This assignment will NOT be accepted as late work.
