The Photogram
1. Find an image of a human face. This can be drawn from your imagination or from a photograph. Your source image can be from the internet, or from an image you bring in from home. It can be realistic or abstract. No cartoon characters! If printing an image out to use, you must print your image 8x10” in size. See me for help with this!
2. Trace the photogram template onto a piece of newsprint and then draw your portrait inside the box. You may use any method you want (freehand draw, grid your image, trace on light table) since this is photography, not drawing class!
3. When you have a final line drawing, color the back of your newsprint with a graphite drawing pencil. Lay the newsprint on a piece of red construction paper and trace over your original pencil lines with a pencil or ballpoint pen.
4. Go over the transferred pencil lines with a pencil to make them show up better. Decide what you want to be black on your final image. You will go over everything you want to be black with a sharpie marker.
5. Next you will check out an x-acto knife and begin cutting out the black pieces of your photogram. Make sure you have an x-acto cutting board under your work when using the knife.
a. Save any red paper pieces and tape them on to a clear plastic sheet with clear tape, lining them up with your newsprint drawing.
b. Throw away any paper scraps with black sharpie on them.
6. When all of your pieces of red paper are taped onto the clear sheet including the background (frame), you are ready to print in the darkroom!
